Abstract Academics worry grade inflation lowers standards; whereas, employers are concerned grades may not distinguish students’ abilities. These concerns dismissed if higher reflect improved academic achievement and inflation. Potential is examined using data from 17,696 classes between 1985 2019 in the College of Agriculture Life Sciences at Texas A&M University. Evidence systemic increase found after controlling for institution, instructor, student characteristics. Grade increases partially explained by recruiting better more female students. inflation, however, be associated with increased hiring graduate students other instructors.
